HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
At the end of the 16th century, a major hydraulic project — later known as the “Taglio di Porto Viro” — diverted the waters of the Po River through a canal that flowed into the Canal Bianco, creating what is now called the Po di Venezia. Completed in 1604, the project has remained over time one of the most important examples of water regulation, meant to be remembered in the history of our region.
A similar intervention took place on the Po di Levante, and gradually the deposition of alluvial processes created the land of Rosolina, which was later granted or sold at auction by the Serenissima Republic.
After several changes of ownership, in 1941, Cav. R. Scagliarini bought a piece of land from the Vianelli Counts, setting up the base for restore the island and start the first drainage works to reclaim land for farming.
He carried out important works on the island, renovated the farmhouses, the stables, and the small wooden bridge that, from Pozzatini, crossed the lagoon to reach Cà Vianelli (now Cà Tiepolo).

After several changes of ownership, in 1962, Albarella Beach Holding A.G. (controlled by Credit Suisse) acquired the island, and in 1976 it was officially renamed Albarella S.A.S., which was later transformed into Albarella S.P.A.
Then, in 1988, the Marcegaglia family purchased the entire shareholding of Albarella S.P.A., which they still manage personally.
(We appreciate Mr. A. Pasini for some historical details from his book “Albarella – The Return of the Knight” – the history of the island from 1753 to 1995)
